EVENTS OF SATURDAY, NISAN 16, 32 A.D. [SHABBAT - SATURDAY SABBATH]
JESUS LAYS DEAD IN THE TOMB
Jesus was laid into the borrowed tomb of Joseph of Arimathaea on Thursday, Nisan 14 afternoon (Preparation Day and Passover) and He remained in the tomb all through Friday, Nisan 15 (the Feast of Unleavened Bread), all through Saturday, Nisan 16 (Saturday Sabbath), and He still lay dead in the tomb until early Sunday morning, Nisan 17 (Feast of First-fruits) when He resurrected.
Once again, it is important to note here that both Friday, Nisan 15 (Feast of Unleavened Bread) and Saturday, Nisan 16 (Saturday Sabbath) were considered by the Jewish people to be ‘Sabbath Days’ and therefore NO WORK could be done on either of those two days. Neither was it possible for the Jewish people to purchase any items from Jewish merchants on either of those days until AFTER sunset on Saturday, Nisan 16.
In Mark 16:1, we read...
And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
It would have had to have been AFTER sunset on Saturday before the women would have been able to buy spices to prepare for the anointing of Jesus dead body.
In John 19:38-40. we read:
And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
Apparently, the women who had bought spices and were going to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus were not aware that the body of Jesus had ALREADY been wound up in spices by Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus two days prior (the late afternoon of Thursday, Nisan 14).
