And the woman was clothed round about with purple and scarlet, and gilt with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of the abomination and filthiness of her fornication. (Rev. 17:4, DRCB)
And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: (Rev. 17:4, KJB)
We know with certainty that the “Great Harlot”represents a ‘religious power’(an ‘apostate religious system’), and therefore she is dressed in what may be called the ‘religious attire’of purple and scarlet. – Her clothing, as well as her being decked out with gold, precious stones, pearls, and a gold cup in her hand represents the great wealth and luxury that she enjoys. She is sitting as a queen with temporary spiritual rule and political support from the disguised Roman Empire [the European Union].
This elaborate decking out may also refer to the adornments that can be seen in her many apostate religious temples that she has built throughout the earth.
The “golden cup” in the “Great Harlot’s” hand is a representation of the idolatrous abominations that she has offered to the world to get drunk on. – It may also include the idolatrous abomination regarding the shed blood of Jesus Christ that she has offered to the inhabitants of the earth.
